Collaboration > Competition
2022 is the year of the Self Maed entrepreneur. Subscribe to the Self Maed Report for a behind-the-scenes look into my business progress, new ventures, success stories and lessons learned.
This is lesson 9 of 11 after 1 year in business.
“Competition whose motive is merely to compete, to drive some other fellow out, never carries very far. The competitor to be feared is one who never bothers about you at all, but goes on making his her own business better all the time.”
— Henry Ford
There are many coaches and biz owners out there who highlight the importance of staying up-to-date on your competition. I’m not saying they’re wrong, but competition has just never felt like a thing for me.
Because there is no competition. The only person I’m competing with is who I was yesterday.
No one can do what I do, how I do it. I don’t get fazed over offers similar to mine, I’m not pressed when I lose followers and I don’t really have idols.
Is this small-minded? Maybe.
I do find “competition” useful for comparing pricing, structure and inspo but other than that…? 🤷🏽♀️
Alternatively, my attention goes to collaboration. I love nothing more than partnering with confident, badass, inspiring humans and I will always highlight female business owners, especially women of color.
Here are 3 of my favorite and most impactful collaborations from the past year:
- In July, I took over my homie Candace’s IG Stories for a few days. It was so fun to interact with another audience and it massively expanded my following. I gained almost 700 followers in 3 days and about 40% of The Selfish Reset found me through Candace (love yewww ❤️ ).
- Not business related, but I collaborate with my friends turned family, Dayo and Kenny, for our Medium blog GeniusTalk. There are no words for how good it feels to have a creative project that has nothing to do with work. Sometimes we make money off of our viewership which is a great added bonus, but it’s in no way the motivation. Solopreneurs, freelancers, all you humans — get a non-work creative project in your life ASAP!
- I launched The Selfish Reset in December with a mission to highlight other powerful women and in total, the 6-week program will feature 8 female business owners, 7 of color. I got a value-add for my program, my community got to benefit from their beautiful talents and they got to be in front of a new audience. Everybody won! 🙌🏾
The Monthly Selfish Reset is now open for registration — come create the confidence you need to build the life of your dreams! You deserve it.
