You’re not building a business…

2022 is the year of the Self Maed entrepreneur. Subscribe to the Self Maed Report for a behind-the-scenes look into my business progress, new ventures, success stories and lessons learned.

This is lesson 6 of 11 after 1 year in business.

Last summer I launched the Self Maed Bootcamp (👋🏾 hey Besties!), a 6-week course designed for new and aspiring online business owners. It was one of the highlights of my year and what maed me fall in love with group coaching.

Of the themes that I very gently beat into the Bootcamp Besties, my favorite was the importance of building a brand rather than building a business.

What’s the difference?

A business is based off of what you do whereas a brand is built off of who you are, your values and your community.

My business is forever changing because who wants to do the same thing forever? My brand though is consistent. Although I’ll always grow as a person, my values are pretty much here to stay.

I value efficiency, kindness, patience, curiosity, education, self-mastery, building community and having fun. Whether I’m teaching you how to use Notion, how to get Selfish or helping you with business strategy, all of those values apply.

I began building my brand way before I had a business and whether you aspire to be an entrepreneur or not, I cannot stress how important it is to intentionally build your brand. You basically already have a digital footprint through social media, so why not be intentional about it?

A bonus of building a brand rather than a business is that as I evolve as an entrepreneur, I get to take my community with me. It means that I get to show up for consultations as my (vulgar) self. Shit, it means that I get to show up everywhere as my authentic self.

My business is dependent upon my brand and not the other way around because my brand is the priority.

So, which are you building — a brand or a business?

Stay authentic,
Maegan
